About EAC-SMS
A regional passport to higher learning.
The EAC Student Mobility Scholarship Scheme is a regional programme designed to promote student exchange across the East African Community. It supports students to pursue studies at universities in a Partner State other than their own — deepening regional integration through shared learning.
This is a cost-sharing programme delivered by IUCEA, host universities and students together.

Host Universities
Waive tuition and examination fees for students from other Partner States.

IUCEA Secretariat
Covers travel expenses, health insurance, and a research lump sum for Master's & PhD.
03
Student / Guardian
Cover accommodation, daily living expenses, and other university fees.
Eligibility
Who can apply?
The scholarship is open to nationals of EAC Partner States who meet the following criteria. Meet them all and you're ready to apply.
- 01Be a national and resident of an EAC Partner State (national ID / passport / birth certificate required).
- 02Apply to an eligible programme at a university in a country other than your own.
- 03Excellent academic performance per the host programme's entry requirements.
- 04Upper Second-Class Honours, Distinction or equivalent for Master's and PhD applicants.
- 05Age below 35 for Master's; below 45 for PhD at the time of application.
- 06Work experience is an added advantage for PhD applicants.
Application Process
Three steps to apply.
The application is two-fold — one for admission and one for the EAC-SMS scholarship. IUCEA handles the university submission on your behalf.

Choose your programme
Identify a programme and host university from Table 1 in the official Call for Applications on the IUCEA website. Review each programme's admission requirements.
02
Prepare your documents
Compile all required documents (see checklist). Foreign qualifications must be equated by your national commission for higher education. Non-English documents must be officially translated.
03
Submit to IUCEA
Complete the online application form and upload all required PDFs. IUCEA processes admissions for qualified candidates — do not apply to universities directly. Use eacsms@iucea.org for inquiries only.

- 5Recent passport-size colour photograph (head and upper shoulders).
- 6Evidence of nationality of an EAC Partner State.
- 7Proof of residency (certificate from the local government).
- 8Evidence of awards — leadership, community service, etc.
- 9Any other supporting evidence — medical reports, letters of reference.
